Major Upgrade to Map Resolution

The FATMAP 3D global map is at the very heart of our product and something we take great pride in. The map is the first thing most of our community go to FATMAP for, and that’s why you see it as the first screen when you open the FATMAP website and app.

For the past few years, we’ve been working on updating and improving both the summer and winter satellite imagery on the map, as well as the tools like terrain overlays, route drawing and waypoints.

We’re now more than excited to say we’ve made a huge improvement to the detail of the map itself, increasing the resolution by a factor of 8!

The new map is live now on both the FATMAP app and website!

We changed the way we load and render gradient information which allowed us to increase the resolution 8X. This improves several terrain tools such as the Avalanche, Aspect and Gradient overlays. It also makes the satellite imagery pop up in much more fidelity.

There are clear advantages to better and more detailed imagery on the map, aside from the visual improvements.

On the regular summer and winter satellite imagery, you can now pick out more detail in the terrain, from even further out. It’s easier to see the contours of mountains and valleys, and it helps you understand the surroundings and plan your routes even better than before.

One of the biggest improvements is to the terrain tools. Simply turn on the Gradient, Aspect or Avalanche overlays and you’ll see it.

This brings a whole new level of improved planning to your adventures. When assessing the terrain for a ski-tour, you’ll be able to see much more detail on the avalanche risk overlay. When looking at the gradient for a trail run, you’ll be able to see the exact point that slope turns from 20 degrees to 30!

Another feature that will see an advantage are our Embeds, with the more detailed map improving the display of the embedded routes and destinations.
