CRANKWORX CAIRNS

Making its debut in Cairns this year, the Crankworx World Tour for 2022 is nearing its end. And what a tour it’s been!

After a week of intense competition across multiple disciplines in Australia, we now have a good idea who is in the lead for the overall titles of Crankworx King and Queen in 2022. With only one more round to go in Rotorua next month, it is still an incredibly close call at the top of the rankings. In the King standings, just 13 points separate Bas Van Steenbergen and Tomas Lemoine. In the running for the Queen of Crankworx title only 31 points split the top three riders.

IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS KONA, HAWAI’I

The iconic Ironman World Champs in Kona took place earlier this month under the beating Hawaiian sun. Thousands of participants swam through turquoise waters, pedalled by black lava rocks, and ran over never-ending tarmac.

This year, Norwegian Gustav Iden seized the World Title, a first for his home country and the first male rookie to win the 2022 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship in the fastest time this race has ever seen: 7:40:24. Gustav ran a record-breaking 2:36:15 run to his victory.

In the first-ever, two-day VinFast IRONMAN World Championship, a groundbreaking, women's-only professional race also took place. Californian Chelsea Sodaro became the first rookie in 15 years to win the event, taking the title in 8:33:46.

ENDURO TIROL TOUR

The inaugural Enduro Tirol Tour brought fresh air to the international mountain biking scene this year. The new series saw Enduro races held all over Tyrol and in some of the most renowned MTB locations in the region. Riders competed in the Kitzbühel Alps, Sölden, and Innsbruck between 27 August and 2 October.

At the last tour of the series in Sölden, Austrian Kevin Maderegger took the title of the Pro Elite Men with a time of 20m39s. Meanwhile, Laura Stigger, also from Austria, took home the Women’s Pro Elite with a time of 25m09s.

A Controversial Everest Concert

The Everest authorities are not pleased with 19-year-old Mexican citizen, Juan Diego Martinez Alvarez. Upon summiting the tallest mountain on Earth this year, Alvarez did something that surprised everyone: he played a tune on his keyboard.

As the first person to summit Everest and give a concert of sorts, in a way it’s a world record, but the Nepalese authorities won’t stand for it. They are taking steps to reject his summit certificate as they claim the musical stunt wasn’t given prior permission.

Alvarez and his keyboard safely made it back down the mountain without leaving any lasting effects on the world’s highest point. However, this incident has been seen by some as a bit of a mockery of Everest and serves as further proof to demonstrate how popular and silly it has become for some people.

A SENSATIONAL ADVENTURE STORY

Sasha DiGiulian, Matilda Söderlund, and Brette Harrington made history this month. The trio became the first all-female team to climb the Rayu route in the Picos de Europa massif in Spain.

They also are the only team to make the second ascent of the 610 metre-tall (2000+ ft) 8c (5.14b) big wall - their achievement marked the hardest graded big wall achieved by an all female team.

Rayu was first established by Iker Pou, Eneko Pou, and Kico Cerdá over five weeks in 2020, and ascends the south face of Spain’s Peña Santa de Castilla via a continuously steepening, heady trad line with spaced bolts.

The first half of the route is in the 5.12 range (6c) that heads up to a spacious yet sharp and sloping ledge - where the female team spent the night. The crux 8c section comes three rope lengths above the ledge, which is followed by two more technical pitches. From there, 60, of technical scrambling leads to the summit.

The team not only battled the steep wall but also the changing weather. Storms were everywhere, from thunderstorms and rain to heavy fog. Ultimately, the surrounding views of the Cordillera Cantábrica range were breathtaking.
